His best enemy

Chronicles from the war between Fedez and Codacons

By

His recent crisis with Chiara Ferragni is now official, but Fedez can rest easy: there is someone who seems to have no intention of breaking up with him yet, and he answers to the acronym of Codacons.

The well-known and controversial association for consumer rights is in fact for the Milanese rapper a faithful companion in quarrels between video-accusations and press releases in derogatory tones. So much so that Fedez-Codacons has now become an inseparable pair of actors in a (controversial) soap opera that has already had dozens of episodes.

It didn't end there

The final seasons of a series are never the same as the first, and even the latest clash between Fedez and Codacons ended with a mild apology from the latter. The association withdrew a note in which it seemed to accuse Lucia of evading taxes, after the rapper had said he was “technically null and void”, having registered everything in his companies. Codacons explained that the intention of the complaint was not to accuse anyone, but to shed light on the matter and promised to get to the bottom of it.

There was no doubt about this, however, given that on the association's site, six statements on Fedez or the Ferragnez were published in February 2024 alone. In all, there are 60 archive pages concerning them: a morbid, and very often specious, attention that has led the rapper to speak of “judicial stalking”.

The beginnings

Codacons began to take an interest in Italy's most powerful VIP couple on the occasion of their wedding in Sicily in 2018, starting with the “customized” plane that brought the bride and groom-to-be and friends to the island, via a private gate. Behaviours to be stigmatised, according to the consumers' association, which also put Chiara Ferragni's branded water under scrutiny because it was sold at a price deemed "abnormal", in addition to the documentary on the Ferragnez: a "mega commercial" of little artistic value.

Fundraising

A founding chapter of the saga was then staged during the first weeks of the Coronavirus pandemic, in 2020, when many hospitals, but also associations and private individuals promoted fundraising to support healthcare or certain sectors at risk. In this regard, Codacons denounced Fedez's initiative in favour of Milan's San Raffaele on the GoFundMe platform as unclear.

Fedez went on the counter-attack, accusing Codacons of fraud for an online banner in which he asked for money “for the Coronavirus” even though the association did not deal with health. The money was needed by Codacons itself 'for the simple reason that, like everyone else, we are in trouble because of the CoronaVirus epidemic', the consumer association had explained. For the court in Rome, however, the banner was quite clear and not misunderstood. On 6 May, the rapper will have to answer for the offence of slander in this matter.

Sanremo

In 2021, the battleground was Sanremo with Codacons requesting Fedez's exclusion from the festival “after the illicit publication on the web” of parts of the song he was to present in the competition.

The association later denounced the rapper (who was competing that year with Francesca Michielin) for Ferragni's stories inviting her husband to televote, and rejoiced at Fedez's “failure to win”, considering it “a complete success for Codacons”.

An enemy for all seasons

There are many other occasions on which Codacons has brought up Fedez over the years. From accusations of surreptitious advertising to accusations of homophobia for the lyrics of old songs, always finding new footholds to generate discussion and interaction. And even when it was Fedez who won in court, as in late 2020, the association managed to file a complaint because the acquittal sentence was allegedly written by a trainee who was also a follower of the singer.

Drawn into this situation in spite of himself, Fedez has become a champion of the battle against the nonsense of Codacons' complaints, most of the time designed only to gain free publicity. He still dedicates videos to the association on his social channels or passages during the podcast Mucchio Selvaggio, with often colourful language. A slap in the face that now betrays affection, because a trusted enemy is forever.

So be it, until the next complaint, the next lawsuit and the next sentence.
