Nanna Stech: the coolest Danish ceramist of the moment

Art and sustainability meet creating irresistible objects

By Jessica Marinetto

Nanna Stech is a ceramist from Copenhagen, who, through her creations, makes us reflect on handmade solutions and on the weight that sustainability can have nowadays.

A genuine approach and a strong sensitivity for art are the characteristics that outline her profile. Apparently distant worlds that enter into symbiosis. From fashion to illustrations to the world of ceramics, Nanna Stech tells her story through her creativity by creating unique design objects and upcycling.

Harmonic, linear and minimal shapes created with materials derived from the ground, such as clay, necessary for the creation of fluid shapes that remind us of the importance of an increasingly green world. Nanna Stech's ceramics are born from her own hands, as well as a flower from her stem, deliberately inaccurate, to immediately emphasize the craftsmanship of the product. The rhythm that marks her small works of art, from vases to candle holders to mise en place, is dictated by gradations of colors and spots of paint that accentuate the sculptural volumes.

The concept of nature reappears through the same colors that recall the yellow of the sun, the lilac of wild flowers, the blue of the sea and the green of the hills. These objects have the task of giving a less artificial, more dynamic and aware touch to the furnishings of our homes, whether they are located in the city center or in the countryside.

However, to fully understand her creativity it is necessary to underline the ability to bring fashion and art together in a single art work. Often the references are instantaneous as the "Flower Bag Collection" composed of purse-shaped vases of various sizes and models where, instead of lipstick and wallet, we find roses and peonies. Or again, ceramic boots and sandals on which are placed daisies and earrings that recall the organic.

Other times, however, they are veiled like two-piece vases that try to compensate each other like a total-look, textures that look like tartan, floral or striped fabrics. Right here Nanna Stech introduces us to an interaction between ethics and design research where it is no longer possible to overlook the concept of sustainability and helps us to reflect on how a bottle, bag or belt in different materials, from plastic or leather , can make us see and appreciate the object more.
