Virgin Galactic, villas on the French Riviera and other millionaire trips

Some not-so-cheap destinations

By

If it is true, as they say, that money does not bring happiness, it is equally evident that having a budget with many zeros helps to organise trips and holidays with a certain freedom of choice. Of course, even with a relatively modest investment, and perhaps with the right company, one can have certainly satisfying travel experiences. But certainly those who can earmark very large sums of money for their holidays, be it summer, Easter or Christmas, will be able to indulge their fancies, always remaining within the bounds of legality.

Renting private islands or castles by the sea, luxuriously adapted lighthouses or sumptuous mahogany boats, villas with parks that lap the sea or wooden stilts from which to dive directly into the ocean... these are just a few of the hypotheses that a euro millionaire can put on his agenda for next summer, without worrying too much about the arrival of the high season.

Right at peak season, estimated to be in August, given the success of the first suborbital flight at the end of June, Virgin Galactic should be ready to welcome space tourists. To try this galactic experience, surely one to be told to one's grandchildren, it seems it will be necessary to buy a rather stellar ticket, about 450 thousand dollars each.

Moving from the stars to the abyss, in other times one might have mentioned the wonder of a billionaire's voyage into the depths of the oceans, sailing into the dark to discover the wreck of the Titanic. But what happened in those waters advises avoiding the subject altogether. For submarine enthusiasts, we merely point out the Atlantis Submarine tour, an underwater cruise, 'only' 40 metres deep, in the Caribbean Sea. The experience itself is not even that expensive, $114 per person. There is the small detail that one must first arrive on the island of Aruba, a few miles off the coast of Venezuela.

Without straying too far from there, we land on Curaçao, another small Caribbean island not far away. Here, one can spend a beautiful August week in a beautiful suite with a garden overlooking the sea, in a certainly fine setting, for only EUR 5,000. Flight and starred meals obviously not included.

The budget goes up slightly for a Sunrise Beach Villa in the Alila Kothaifaru in the Maldives: small private pool, garden, 200 metres of living space, short sandy path to the most beautiful beach you have ever dreamed of... an experience that costs around 1,000 euro per night. A figure actually not that high if indeed a gazebo at the Maldives (of Salento) costs the same.

But since there was talk of a rich man's holiday, better to add a few zeros and set sail on the Octopus, a yacht with 10 cabins, two VIP flats, swimming pool, cinema and spa for only 2.2 million a week. And I don't think that figure includes the fuel that this authentic ship consumes sparingly.

For the rich man who prefers to keep his feet on the ground, there is instead Villa La Ramade, in Saint Tropez on the Côte d'Azur. The mansion has a master suite with a private and very panoramic terrace, five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and accommodation for security personnel. The villa, obviously equipped with a swimming pool, is offered in August at around EUR 10,000 per night.
