25 April in Umbria: what to see in Spoleto

Discovering Umbria

By

Spoleto, the city that has hosted Don Matteo's popular cycling tour of Umbria for a few years now, lends itself to being an ideal destination for long weekends and bridges, amidst fortresses, ancient churches, centuries-old forests and wineries with good traditions.

Among the most famous sights is the imposing Rocca Albornoz, inside which is the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, which together with the National Archaeological Museum and the Roman Theatre offers a fairly clear picture of the city's long history. A little further down, on the slopes of the hill on which the Rocca stands, is the famous Ponte delle Torri, another impressive sight for tourists.

Choosing a hotel, b&b or agritourism in the area will depend mainly on the type of experience you want to have, whether within a small or large historic centre or in a structure immersed in the countryside and with a relaxing view of hills and vineyards. Once you have packed your bags and recovered your energy for the trip, you can set off to discover a city that is definitely underestimated and that instead has a historical and artistic heritage far beyond expectations.

Fans of the Festival dei Due Mondi already know it, everyone else can discover the Duomo, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, as well as the nearby basilica of Sant'Eufemia, said to have been built over a thousand years ago on the palatine chapel of the Lombard dukes. For those who prefer less dated forms of art, there is the Modern Art Gallery in Palazzo Collicola, which also houses a library with about 30,000 volumes mainly on modern and contemporary art. At one time it also had a nice bar in the atrium of the Palazzo, but there have been various vicissitudes and so it is not certain that it is still there.

An in-depth look at the 10 things not to be missed in Spoleto can be found here, but the Sacred Wood of Monteluco should definitely be added to the list: the centuries-old holm oak forest is criss-crossed by paths and trails, and there is no shortage of good establishments to refresh oneself after a good ride or a few hours of trekking. And if you don't want to leave Spoleto thirsty, it's best to plan a visit to the area's various wine cellars, where you can treat yourself to another trip through Trebbiano Spoletino, Sangiovese, Barbera, Merlot...

Since the geography of Umbria and its exact location is not really a matter of widespread knowledge, it is worth mentioning that Spoleto is 50 kilometres from the Orte motorway exit and 30 minutes from the Terni railway station.
