The gilet is becoming one of the most followed trends of the FW20/21 season. Some lighter versions had already been glimpsed during the summer, but with the arrival of winter this garment has what it takes to become a must-have.

The vest has a noble origin that dates back to the period of the Sun King, when the sovereign decided to force the courtiers of Versailles to wear it, in love with the sophisticated style it conferred. Louis XIV launched a real fashion, spreading the so-called “Habit alla française” throughout Europe, a men's suit consisting of trousers, jacket and obviously the vest.

It was only many decades later, in the 60s, that the gilet became part of the women's wardrobe, thanks to the audacity of Yves Saint Laurent in France and Moschino in Italy who made it part of their women's collections. Its notoriety increased when in the 70s it began to be used by the protagonists of the Cabaret, one of the most popular forms of entertainment of those years.

Although its origin leads it back to the male wardrobe, its presence in the female world has increasingly strengthened and today it is one of the most worn garments by icons of the fashion system. Among the different fabrics, knitwear is the favorite for a vintage look in step with the times; it can be worn in the office for a formal look, in the afternoon for a more sporty outfit and in the evening to celebrate with friends.

Thanks to its versatile soul, there are many styles to opt for: the classic white vest is easier to match but not obvious to wear, especially if combined with a striped or printed shirt to give a touch of style that must never be missing. ; the more courageous will be able to choose a vest with embroidery, prints or designs, to be used as a highlight and distinctive sign of their look.

The choice of the vest does not depend only on the color but also on the shape: the classic length is the most recommended for those who, as a first purchase, want to be sure to use it properly; once the gilet has become part of our everyday life we can opt for the crop version, more suggestive, or the over one to be used also as a dress. Observing the street styles posted on social media and shared by influencers will help us understand how to best wear the vest this season.
