What time is the end of the world?

The end of the Planet, for the most diverse causes, has been hypothesized and announced many times even in modern times. At the moment the forecasts have not been very accurate, however, something could happen on Friday, November 13rd..

Emilian rocker Luciano Ligabue has borrowed and re-launched the question of REM: "What time is the end of the world?". A legitimate curiosity to be able to update the calendar on Google accordingly and anticipate, if necessary, the commitments originally set for the days following the disaster. In the not-so-distant past many times have we wondered when this Earth would stop rotating on its axis and securing life on its surface, often referring to catastrophic theories and predictions nefarious relaunched more or less artfully by sects and santons looking for owls.

Michel de Nostredame, Nostradamus for friends, was one of the luckiest and most famous predictors of misfortune and his novels, cinquine or what they were are often cited to update the calendar and calculate the date of Armageddon. The accurate and probably somewhat eccentric study of its centuries would have revealed 1999 as the year of a huge catastrophe, perhaps the definitive one. Perhaps for this reason the English TV series Spazio 1999 chose that time reference. But the technology-end match of the world also affects a little later event like the Millennium bug, computer problem related to the change of date between December 31, 1999 and January 1, 2000 that should have caused wrecks and failures to lethal structures such as military bases and nuclear power plants such as to annihilate mankind. It is likely that these predictions were disproved by the facts.

Not even the most plausible idea of an epidemic of black holes that, opening in leopard spot, would have sucked everything and everyone, has finally proved to be exact: On September 10, 2008, at CERN in Geneva, the Large Hadron Collider, the largest physics experiment of all time, was launched. Being a very complex machine, in which bundles of protons would collide in order to reproduce the state of the cosmos immediately after the Big Bang, some argued that its ignition would activate an authentic factory of black holes, able to swallow everything. But Switzerland is still there, with its exodus autogrill, to separate Lombardy from Germany.

In later times, the Mayans would warn that the world would end on December 21, 2012. The friendly and friendly pre-Columbian population, very advanced in some areas as cruel in others, would have considered stable for 21/12/12 on the last day of the Planet, based on astronomical observations and calculations traceable to the alignment of the Sun with the equatorial plane of the Milky Way and perhaps the presence of a mysterious planet that should have impacted with ours, obviously erasing all life. But even the Mayans, apparently, had miscalculated.

Much more concrete, albeit metaphorically, is the Clock of the Apocalypse, which changes the time according to approaching the potential end of the world. In this case the approach to the zero hour is not linked to abstruse theories derived from old stones found in the forest or to the texts of some confused alchemist. The estimate of the end of the globe concerns everything that man does or tries to do to reach that ambitious goal: climate disasters, conflicts, the frantic exploitation of resources.

Looking to the future, with hope, we can remember that the Austro-American physicist Heinz von Foerster, professor at the University of Illinois, in 1960 predicted the end of the world for November 13, 2026, date not too distant in fact. His predictions, a little splatter but very suitable to inspire a catastrophic Hollywood film, saw the physical crushing of the populations present on earth due to excessive population growth. Mark it on the calendar and remember: it will be a Friday, 13rd.
