Crime stories that drive us crazy

Why does the Joker sequel starring Lady Gaga seem to have a good chance of breaking through at the box office?

By

The anticipations are very few but the anticipation is high. The movie "Joker: Folie á Deux" will tell us the true story of Harley Quinn and Joker and will be set at Arkham Asylum, the psychiatric hospital that houses super-villains located in the now well-known and spooky Gotham. It will be in this dark city full of pitfalls that Arthur Fleck, now become the Joker, and psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel, later known as Harley Quinn, will make their acquaintance and love will be sparked, at least on her part, as recounted by Paul Dini in 1994 in the Batman comic book.

Harley falls in love with Joker almost immediately when he tells her about his childhood of abuse and violence. She then decides to help him escape, and understanding his hatred of Batman, she marries his crusade against the superhero. To make her beloved happy she captures the Bat Man, but Joker, instead of being happy, goes on a rampage and throws her out a window because she has succeeded in what he has always failed at.

While the girl is convalescing in a cell in Arkam vows to be done with Joker, he sends her a rose with a get well card and this simple gesture is enough to make her fall madly in love again. A story that rings true today, yet another example of toxic, blinding, sick and obviously dangerous love. Affective addiction is a relationship disorder that involves a distortion of the perception of self and other. There is a lack of clarity, a tendency to excuse the other and to use the word love in a decidedly inappropriate way.

Grandmothers would have said, "You have ham slices in front of your eyes." But this blindness often leads to unrecoverable endings. This pattern repeats and repeats itself becoming a stereotype just like in the movie. The situation that arises between the Joker and Harley is typical of a dangerous relationship in which he is initially sympathetic and empathetic toward a needy figure, assuming a false savior role, aimed solely at conquering the other to feed his own EGO and she thinks she can change and understand him. Does love save everything? No. But it can be very dangerous.

Cinema has always represented love in all its facets. But it is the love formed by fatal couples that leaves the most mark making the characters unforgettable in the hearts of viewers. The sequel to Joker that sees the return of Todd Phillips as director, co-writer and producer, Joaquin Phoenix as Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley will be called Folie à Deux. And precisely not by chance, but is rather the title is the result of a deliberate choice referring to a disorder of the psyche known as shared psychosis.

Because of this condition, some beliefs typical of delusional disorder are "transferred" from one patient to another through a very close personal relationship, such as with a friend, relative or lover. Given the times in which we live where feminicides are the order of the day it would take a clean bill of health to be able to watch certain films that end up being incentives for emulation. Always the grandmothers of old used to tell children, "it's just a movie don't be afraid." Success is assured and dated October 2, 2024.

- Harley Quinn: "What are you going to do, kill me Mr. J.?" - Joker: "What? No, I'm not going to kill you. I just want to hurt you. Very...very badly." (Joker&Harley)
