The right in rainbow colors

Sincere change of course or rainbow washing electoral?

By

One vertical: it's expecting in September for maturity. Three words, 14 letters: government crisis. The summer crossword puzzle of Italian politics, far from institutional classrooms, for some years gives not only gossip but also great plot twists: see the voice Salvini at Papeete.

Because where one would like to write Ius scholae in big letters, the other would willingly encase Italians you are born in, carefully avoiding every box whose traits do not reflect Italianity. It seems that in the majority of governments there are frictions on the flag (the only one left) of the left: rights. Although it may seem like a novelty, some names of center-right already diverge from the conservative line of their parties, especially with regard to the LGBTQIA+ sphere, a hot topic for voters and elected officials, even more than that of integration.

The left starts again by Mussolini

"Better fascist than faggot": running the year 2006, at Porta a Porta they discussed Vladimir Luxuria and Alessandra Mussolini, in front of an embarrassed Bruno Vespa. Today, the statesman’s niece could not be further from that statement: almost twenty years later, she has become a champion of the LGBTQIA+ community. The first open and surprising support came in 2017, regarding the DDL Zan; since then it has not stopped, despite the subsequent decline among the nostalgic ranks: apologies to Luxuria for the indecent exit from Vespa, support for the registration of children of homoparental couples, the defense of Pride as a space of freedom. If the worst slaps on the Meloni government in terms of rights come from Mussolini, the multiverse is a beautiful place without borders: you could say that she has done good things.

The Che renovator of Berlusconi’s house

In a recent interview with the Corriere Marina Berlusconi, in full harmony with the moderate side of the current government, did not refrain from punching allies: "If we talk about abortion, end of life or LGBTQ rights, I feel more in tune with the left of common sense". Who knows what the Cavaliere would have thought of this statement: perhaps a judgment oscillating between the disappointment of having a communist in the house and pride for the relaunching strategy of Forza Italia. Like the Arabian phoenix, in fact, the Azzurri line is trying to rise from its ashes, in a new liberal guise, straying from the obscurantism of Lega and FdI. It is still unclear whether it is a process imposed from above (Berlusconis partly still support the party economically) or if pushed from below: there are many voters, especially among the militants of Forza Italia Giovani, who demand a step forward on civil rights.

Zaia, voice out of the chorus of Carroccio

Even from the party that you do not expect semi-progressive voices are raised, one in particular: that of the three-time governor of Veneto Luca Zaia. Struck by the road to Damascus, for years he has been saying that civil rights cannot be a prerogative of the left alone, but must first and foremost be a common issue of civilization. Already in 2019, on a stage not exactly gay friendly as the one of the World Congress of Families in Verona, he had the courage to say that the only pathology to be fought was homophobia, raising many doubts about an alleged betrayal of their electorate. In favor of civil unions (less to the adoption of children), DDL Zan and promoter of the regional center for gender identity disorders in Padua, Zaia is perhaps the Lega exponent most distant exponent from the Vannaccian direction taken by Carroccio: will the coming of the Generale-pensiero lead him to other shores of the center-right?

Can a few voices outside the chorus dream of a pro-LGBTQIA+ right? How long does it take for a country to be divided on economic, environmental and identity issues but united by the defense of fundamental human rights? As long as the political parties outside and inside the Parliament, will continue to define themselves by denial of the opponent, until they have the courage to support a just cause, regardless of the flag that carries it and for fear of discontenting their electoral fans, will remain a utopia.
