Who is Jill Stein?

The forgotten US presidential candidate

By

In a political landscape dominated by major parties, the figure of Jill Stein emerges as a symbol of resistance against bipartisanship. A physician and activist, Stein was the Green Party candidate in the 2012, 2016 and 2024 american presidential elections, advancing a platform based on social justice, environmental sustainability and economic reform.

Arrested on 28 April during a pro-Palestinian demonstration, she is known for taking part in protests she identifies with and fearlessly standing with the people.

Who is Jill Stein?

Born in Chicago in 1950, Jill Ellen Stein received a degree in biology from Harvard and later a doctorate in medicine from the same university. She worked as an internist before turning to politics, driven by a concern for the impact of politics on the environment and public health.

Entry into politics

Stein's political career began at the local level, in Massachusetts, where she first ran for the governorship in 2002. Although she did not win, she won a significant 3.5% of the vote. This result encouraged her to continue her political battle, running several times for various public offices.

Presidential candidacies

In 2012, Stein became the Green Party's presidential candidate, garnering 0.36% of the vote. Her campaign focused on issues such as climate change, economic inequality and the need for universal public healthcare. Stein returned to prominence in 2016, when she obtained 1.07% of the vote. Although this result may seem modest, it represented significant growth for the Green Party.

The Green Platform

Jill Stein has advocated a radical platform with respect to the two main parties. Among the highlights of her presidential campaigns was the Green New Deal, an ambitious plan to transform the US economy towards ecological sustainability and social justice. It proposed the creation of millions of jobs through investments in renewable energy and green infrastructure, as well as advocating the adoption of a universal, free public healthcare system.

Controversy and criticism

Despite his innovative proposals, Stein has met with criticism and controversy. His sceptical stance on vaccines has raised doubts among his supporters and detractors. Moreover, her trip to Russia in 2015, where she attended an event with Vladimir Putin, came under heavy criticism during the 2016 campaign, fuelling suspicions of inappropriate connections to the Kremlin.

Jill Stein's legacy

Jill Stein has never held high public office, but her impact on American politics cannot be underestimated. She has brought forward issues that are often ignored by the major parties, forcing the political debate to confront issues of sustainability and social justice. He has inspired a new generation of activists and politicians who continue to fight for a more equitable and sustainable society.

In an era of extreme polarisation, the figure of Jill Stein remains a symbol of a possible alternative, of a politics that seeks to respond to global challenges with courage and vision. Although rarely mentioned in the mainstream media, her voice continues to resonate among those seeking radical change.
