Apple Vision Pro: real innovation or another tech toy?

Presented in California Vision Pro, the new Apple creature that, according to the company, will revolutionize the future of computing. High-potential technology or just new and expensive entertainment?

By

“Today marks the beginning of a new era for computing”: shot of a madman or proclamation of a visionary? To pronounce these words was Tim Cook, CEO of one of the most futuristic companies in the world, able to revolutionize it, literally with the touch of a finger: net of this, the balance can only lean towards the second option. The prophecy was announced on June 6 in Cupertino, at the headquarters of the bitten apple, on the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, the first spatial computer branded Apple, able to combine “digital content with the physical world”.

At first glance it would seem a common VR headset, with a clean and linear design, as the brand of Steve Jobs has always accustomed us: to some it reminds a pair of ski goggles, others see a snorkeling mask (the memators have gone further, proposing in combination the Apple mouthpiece). The novelties, however, concern the technical components and the mode of use: high-definition micro-OLED display of 23 million pixels; side pods with amplified speakers; an operating system, VisionOS, capable of incorporating input, process and propose them in front of the user’s eyes in 12 milliseconds, eight times faster than a blink of an eye.

The Apple Vision Pro opens new ways to use the most famous apps: commands and interactions with applications will be possible with voice commands and movement of eyes and hands: that is the asteroid that will extinguish keyboards and mouse? In addition, it makes them more immersive and engaging; think of Facetime: the faces of the participants in a call will appear in very high definition in front of the user, which can share with them documents and other tools. The Environments feature, on the other hand, will allow the user to dive into stunning landscapes for, citing the press release, “focus or reduce clutter in busy spaces”. Entertainment will also change dramatically: musical, cinematographic and videogaming experiences will be announced at 360 degrees.

Wonderful to be surrounded by the roar of the Colosseum while watching The Gladiator, addictive as never playing the last Assassin’s Creed, relaxing session of mindfulness among the virgin forests of the Amazon; a question arises though: AND THEN? The spectre of yet another expensive toy hovers over the new product made in Apple: the list price is set at $ 3.499 (about 3.200 euros), available from next year in US stores. The application examples, proposed by the same parent company, are in fact limited to the infinite galaxy of entertainment and leisure.

Let’s try to imagine more concrete applications.

As for the sphere of design, this technology could be used instead of interior renderings: after the simulation of the spaces created by the interior designer, the customer could, on site, see their home take shape. Let’s stay in the world of design: if the resolution of the images and the efficiency of the software allow it, you could save in terms of production costs for 3D object testing.

Even the size of events could suffer a great transformation. Remote discos and concerts, fashion shows, book presentations, matches: a potential enlargement of the audience that would make accessible to all different environments.

Let’s go further: the teaching methods, radically changed already in pre-pandemic times, suggest a greater and continuous stimulation of students. So why not consider studying the Greeks by taking a class on a field trip through the streets of the Acropolis? Why not tackle biology with a journey inside a cell (Siamo fatti così in a futuristic way) or music entering theatres around the world?

Today we see strong limits and the doubts raised about the Apple Vision Pro certainly arise from being faced with a great revolution. Probably the criticisms will end those that, in 2007, welcomed one of the objects today fundamental in our daily lives. Maybe we’ll re-read this article in ten years, and it’ll make you smile for the short-sightedness. Obviously read about the latest generation Vision Pro.
