From Nairobi to Valentino: Elsa Majimbo, the nineteen year old who with her humor made her way into the virtual world (and the real one))

By

Elsa Majimbo is our IGirl of the month and she’s not the usual web star. This young African woman, who kept company and thousands of users online at just eighteen, is a living meme you may already have come across in your Explore section of Instagram or as an audio on Tik Tok.

But Majimbo's character is much more. Winner of the African Social Star Award for E! People's Choice Awards and Forbes Woman Africa Award 2021, Elsa represents a success story of how anyone can make their way into the world being a model for Gen Z. Journalism student, the rise of this influencer not influencer it has just begun.

Elsa Majimbo is the example of genuineness that is popular on the internet. When she started uploading her self-ironic videos to Instagram and Tik Tok a year ago, the 19-year-old from Kenya quickly became a familiar face for many users who spent hours on social media during the first phase of the pandemic, looking for a laugh. From that moment, Elsa has turned into a true icon of comedy and beyond.

After her followers went from 7k to 2.3M, high fashion took notice of her too. Just a few weeks ago Valentino chose her for a unique cross-cultural collaboration: “The Alphabet for Kids & Adults”, a book that thanks to Elsa's humor and honest perspective connects several generations in a fun and inclusive way.

Among his collaborations, even big names like MAC and FENTY. Despite her famous quote, “My favorite color is money”, Elsa is very cautious in choosing her work projects. The strategy is to focus on the long term, on brands in which you can recognize yourself and through which you can express yourself, just like Valentino.

Her bio is short but it says it all. On the one hand, “professional bragger”, two simple words that sum up her being different from the vain “braggers” of which she is the anti-stereotype. On the other hand, “15X chess champion”, a record that earned her the comparison with The Queen’s Gambit’s protagonist Beth Harmon. Yes, Majimbo plays chess and wins.

But the comparison with Harmon does not end there. Just like Beth, no one expected this very young Kenyan journalism student with a passion for chess. However Elsa, who does not accept waste or labels, has come into the spotlight to stay.

Too funny to be taken seriously? Her projects like “Bedtime with Elsa” and the hit “Snack Queen” could be deceiving. In reality, Elsa leaves nothing to chance. As she herself told Forbes (who dedicated an article to her titled “The Real Queen's Gambit: How Elsa Majimbo Is Winning Over A Global Audience, One Move At A Time”), she only follows her instincts and the advice of the most trusted people.

If you don't follow her already, @majimb.o's profile awaits you with lots of simple, comic content and at the same time with a great message: that of a girl who, thanks to likes and views, from Kenya has come exactly where she wanted.
