WMN Role Models: Barbie Ferreira

Did you know that she grew up in a female family?

By Alessandra Nava

Barbie Ferreira’s a real role model: only 23, she already has an impressive CV filled up with interesting projects.

Born in the Queens suburbs in 1996, she was raised up by a women’s team: her mom, a brilliant chef of Brazilian origins, her aunt and her grandmother.

Only 16, Barbara Linhares Ferreira started working in the fashion industry, posing for a few brands. Barbie’s not the average model, her bursting curves, her sensual lips, her milky skin covered in freckles all contribute to make her a unique face that really strikes the camera

It almost seems as if there’s a subtle metaphor in her nickname: Barbie’s name recalls the ultimate white, blonde, skinny doll, whilst she’s a curvy brunette, and she came to change the game. Today’s Barbies changed together with the youngest generations, who are looking for new aesthetic and ethic role models, more authentic and genuine.

In between jobs for H&M and Forever21, Barbie earns a lot of attention thanks to an Aerie beachwear campaign, in which she rocks some sets of bikinis, without being photoshopped and proudly embracing her body.

The worldwide fame came last year, thanks to Euphoria, a TV show produced by Drake which narrates the troubled lives of Gen Z’s teenagers in a very harsh and realistic way. The female characters rule the show, starting from the protagonist played by Zendaya, who’s in the uncomfortable shoes of a drug junkie.

Barbie plays Kat Hernandez, an overweight teenager who’s not as introvert as it seems. Enjoying her story, the audience finds out Kat’s complex relationship with the virtual world of the net, in which she’s super popular, first as an acclaimed One Direction’s fan fictions’ writer and then as a sexy cam girl. Kat’s self-empowering growth is both interesting and annoying to see: we enjoy her path but we also do judge her for her mistakes.

She buys sexy almost BDSM-like clothes, she has sex with a few guys, she falls in love. Her narration goes beyond the usual stereotype of a fat girl who needs a whole makeover in order to fit in her group and eventually in the society. Barbie’s character’s annoying, troublesome, provocative and irresistibly fascinating, and it helped breaking those old clichés beloved by many.

Following Barbie’s IG profile, you’ll find her rocking some edgy glamorous looks, such as a pair of Givenchy boots or the latest Jacquemus collection. She also posed with Euphoria’s co-star, Alexa Demie, in a coordinated cheetah-printed set by LaQuan Smith.

Barbie’s charisma and beauty conquered our hearts, and we cannot way to see her again in Euphoria and in many more things to come
