A chat with Yoniro, the Moon Girl who will take you to the disco

"Our dreams are the first thing worth living for"

By

Defining the bewitching universe of Yoniro is not simple, but one thing is certain: her music is an astral journey that remains in your head like the echo of a lucid dream, so much so that listening to it without starting to dance is practically impossible.

I had a chat with her to find out more about her dreamlike world of mythology and female nature, and here's how she decided to tell herself at Acrimònia.

Hi Yoniro! Tell us who you are.

Hi Acrimonia! I'm Yoniro and I'm a songwriter. Gipsy artist divided between Milan, Salento and Australia. Moon and disco lover.

Your name immediately makes you think of dreamlike references. What do dreams represent for you?

My name is a tribute to the dream world. I started writing my songs just in a state of sleep, so I decided to combine the name of the Greek god of dreams ("Oniro") with that of female energy ("Yoni"). It is also a reminder: as far as I'm concerned, our dreams are the first thing worth living for.

Where do you find inspiration to create?

I try to absorb anything from the environment around me but I also do a lot of personal research: I watch films, fashion shows, I read books, I watch dancers, I watch documentaries and why not, I go on Instagram. I just live until the inspiration finds me.

What do you think an artist as a woman should communicate?

I believe that an artist should not modulate his artistic production as a woman, just because he is such.

What is important to communicate is implicit in his presence: despite discrimination and obstacles, I am here, I am myself and this is my music.

Is it difficult for a woman to make room in the world of music? Who are the singers you admire most?

As in all areas, unfortunately still yes, especially in Italy. There is often this need to codify women through stereotypes. If you do not fall into these schemes you are not recognized and "you are not doing well".

It's an ongoing struggle, but it makes you stronger.

Honestly, I admire all the female artists who "make it", recognizing the efforts behind it. An Italian artist whom I highly value is MYSS KETA. Internationally Lana Del Rey, Rosalìa and FKA Twigs: beautiful poets of our times.

Before saying goodbye, we would like to get to know one of your best memories.

Milan, summer 2016. My best friend takes me to a festival where Grimes and Sofitukker play. Faced with the performance of Sophie and Claire, for the first time I have the courage to tell myself what I want to do when I grow up: to be on stage and sing my songs.

Concerts, people we love, our ambitions: a better memory of this, at this moment, I can't find it.
