The 1461s turn 60: history of celebrities’ most loved Dr. Martens

New variants of the timeless 1461s are coming, the iconic Dr. Martens that celebrities love so much.

By Lucrezia Candelori

It’s been exactly 60 years since the 1461 was produced for the first time in the town of Wollaston, in a Northamptonshire factory. It was a strong and comfortable shoe, made for workmen but bound to become one of the most iconic Dr. Martens’models.

This year, to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the 1461, Dr. Martens decided to release new different variants of the famous three buttonholes leather shoes: new colours and eye-catching details will be added to the classic model, in a real mix between tradition and innovation.

Examples include the 1461 Peppermint Green, made in Smooth leather and with the everlasting yellow stitching, characterized by a new bold and bright colour, and the 1461 Iced, that adds an Ice sole to the established silhouette, available in classic Black, in Cherry Red and in Pale Pink.

During the years this model made history also thanks to many celebrities who made it part of their style, consecrating the 1461s to a global success.
At the beginning this shoe was mostly worn by factory workers, postmen and policemen, but soon it became a true symbol of an ever-changing youth culture, inextricably intertwining with fashion and music.

Even today, sixty years later, it’s still one of celebrities and trendsetters’ most loved and worn models.

Kendall Jenner has been spotted wearing a pair of 1461s more than once: from casual looks to most refined ones, the highest paid model in the world showed us how versatile these Dr. Martens can be.

Her collegue Bella Hadid is no different: accustomed to wear elegant and haute couture outfits on the catwalk, she seems to prefer a much less refined and more grunge style during her everyday life. Bella is a real Dr. Martens’fan, from the classic 1460 boots to the most sophisticated models: on her Instagram we can also find some pictures wearing a pair of 1461s.

Hailey Bieber is another Dr. Martens lover. The worldwide famous model and trendsetter recently showed a minimal and chic outfit of the day on her Instagram stories: a basic top, a blazer, mom jeans and – as the final touch – a pair of 1461s in black patent leather.
