The snow of Cortina and the golden girls

Bassino, Brignone and Curtoni, a dream world championship and a special fan: Sofia Goggia

By

The emptiness of her absence will be felt. Sofia Goggia was the most awaited at the Ski World Championships in Cortina that started on Sunday February 7th with the inauguration ceremony. A ceremony wet from the rain as it was wet from the rain the track of service of Garmisch that Sofia had taken to return to the valley after the postponement of the superG, the 31 past January.

A carrion rain, able to break the dream of our disciple as it has broken her knee. Compound fracture of the tibial plate of the right knee, the medical sentence after falling on that cursed path taken to return to the hotel. The tears were many, said the Olympic downhill champion. After the tears a promise: to come back stronger than before.

This year she won four descents in a row, a feat never succeeded to an Italian: in Cortina they considered her as the great favorite of fast disciplines. He will watch the World Cup on TV with his eyes nailed to the screen to follow his companions. And to cheer.

Marta Bassino will turn 25 on February 27th: she loves the sun of Cuba, loves motorcycles and on skis is a phenomenon. This year he won four giants of the five played in the World Cup. They say he gets distracted: in life, never on the track. She’s the giant’s big favorite, but she also has a very good chance in superg.

Federica Brignone will be 31 in July. She is the daughter of a great skier of the eighties, Ninna Quario, and she won much more than her mother. Last year it entered the history of our ski conquering the General World Cup: no Italian has ever succeeded. In her life he played 243 races and put together 15 wins (7 in giant, 5 in combination, 3 in superg). She is in her fourth world championship: she presented herself with a silver medal when she was 21, always in a giant way.

This year in the World Cup it has not arrived before: it has however centered two second places in the giant and two third place in the superg. She is well and charged. On her side he has the experience. And the ability to manage emotions. In Cortina she brought a backpack of books, cards and the guitar: she likes to play.

Elena Curtoni turned 30 on February 3rd. She won only one career descent. This year she finished third in Switzerland, at Crans Montana, in the free ascent won by Sofia Goggia on 23 January. «I’m glad I got on the podium with Elena - Sofia said at the end of the race - as a child it was my nightmare, she always beat me».

This year the Italian girls climbed 16 times on the podium, they won 8 races (4 downhill and 4 in giant), conquered 4 second places (one downhill, one in superg and 2 in giant) and 4 third places (one downhill, 2 in superg and one in giant). Cortina is a golden opportunity, the opportunity not to be missed, the opportunity of life.
