Interview with Lisa Iannello of This Unique, the brand that redefines the experience of menstruation

From the vacuum of the market to the formation of a heterogeneous team: the story of a consciously revolutionary idea

By ,

As soon as the camera turns on, the first thing I notice about Lisa is her lively gaze. Hungry for ideas, curious but above all willing, she begins to talk about herself without any filter or shame.

The genius of This Unique, the brand of which she is co-founder, lies in the concept for which it was born: bringing the model to subscription in the world of menstruation. And in fact: “who is it that still has the trouble of going every month to buy sanitary pads?”.

Hi Lisa, we finally meet.

In digital, again ... As soon as we pass in the yellow zone, I offer you an aperitif.

What market gap does This Unique come from?

This Unique was created to counter rooted social problems. The first will of the brand is to inform about the topic of menstruation. Period is a physiological process, disinformation about it creates first of all a language barrier, second then unawareness of the environmental impact that sanitary towels have.

What are the stereotypes associated with the world of the period?

Period is a physiological event and of course it is a hormonal disruption. Too often, therefore, we fall back into the stereotype: menstruation = hysteria. It is a self-sustaining vicious circle.

When it comes to menstrual pain what are other useful tips / natural methods to soothe them?

The first grandmother's remedy that I can recommend is the source of heat. We at This Unique are also working on a special variant of the hot water bottle (clearly not in plastic).

How important is it to talk about eco-sustainability in this area considering that 300 billion sanitary pads are used every year?

At the moment it is no longer a necessity but a priority.

Let's debunk some misconceptions about menstruation.

I have it: despite being a beautiful image, the synchronization of the cycle between friends has no scientific basis.

Loving menstruation is a bit too demanding but are there any positive sides that change the narrative a little?

Of course, challenge accepted! Menstruation is a recurring process that characterizes our body. When they occur, our body is responding to a physiological need. If everything happens normally, it means that we are fine and that our body is responding promptly to an essential need! Is there anything better than being well?

Why is the subscription model a suitable choice also for the female intimate sphere?

The subscription is apt because it is more sustainable, both in environmental terms and in economic terms for a nascent company. Plus, it takes away a recurring break: buying sanitary pads every month.
