In “Onward”, the character of Cyclops was portrayed as non-binary, bringing a refreshingly authentic representation to the world of animated stories. An absolute novelty.
In the film “Luca”, Giulia, with her unique and gender non-conforming personality, showed that acceptance and respect for unconventional gender identities can be approached with sensitivity and compassion. Should we all take Giulia as an example? Yes.

“Soul” also offered a non-binary character in the form of Terry, an ethereal accountant who identifies as “formless energy”, a clever way to challenge gender expectations and reinforce the message of acceptance.

There are many awards that Pixar has received thanks to these characters. The dialogues and situations were artfully written to avoid harmful stereotypes and to promote the idea that everyone should be free to be themselves.
The presence of such a variety of characters has sparked important conversations around the world. It has helped raise awareness of gender diversity and paved the way for greater acceptance of non-conforming gender identities.
Pixar is not alone in this mission, however. Many other film productions are following suit, demonstrating that portraying a new type of character that is entirely in line with the needs of the younger generation is a key step towards a more inclusive future for the film industry.
