The meaning behind Kamala Harris’ pearls

Incorruptibility, sisterhood, feminism

By

First woman to be elected Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris’ name is inevitably going to appear in history books. However, there is more than a reason for Madam Vice President to be remembered. And I’m not talking about the fanclub “babies of Kamala Harris” of which I’m without any doubt the president.

I’m talking about her style. Harris has already proved to be an icon and like any icon, she never wears anything randomly. There is a detail that does not go unobserved. During every public appearance, she always wears pearls around her neck.

It is not only a matter of aesthetic. Pearls are often used by women in politics because they’re a symbol of incorruptibility. However, Kamala Harris’ relationship with pearls has even a deeper meaning.

Harris has been wearing pearls since she was in university, when she was part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the first Black Greek-letter sorority. A legendary sorority in which the founder are referred to as the “twenty pearls”. For this reason, to every new group components is given a badge with a decoration of twenty pearls.

Not only as a symbol of  elegance and wisdom, but also as a symbol of sisterhood. A belonging sign that Kamala Harris has brought in her most meaninful days: from graduation day at Howard University to the most recent Inauguration Day.

And judging by the success she has conquered, pearls seem to bring her good luck.
