The light and dark of Quirinale

On 29 January 2022 Sergio Mattarella was elected as President of the Republic.

By

What everyone had hoped for for a year now, except him: the newly elected President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

Without prejudice to the fact that in democracy alternation is a healthy and fundamental thing, in this parliamentary phase it was time for the center right to indicate a candidate, although shared by not having enough votes to elect him alone;

Thinking about which candidates he could present long before the votes, two names were identified: Mario Monti and Elisabetta Belloni. The first is a man of international character, pro-European, Atlanticist, liberal very similar to President Draghi; the second, unknown to most, is one of the most prestigious minds in the country, a life spent with great commitment at the Farnesina, solving dozens of crises. An exceptional "civil sevant". It would have been embarrassing for the center left to say no; but the predictions, you know, are made to be proven wrong!

Galeotto was the adverb. The whole narrative, often coarse, that has portrayed President Draghi as a new Marquis del Grillo, due to his non-existent quirinalizia ambitions, stems from an adverb pronounced in the speech at the end of December.

Which? Tommaso Labate, author of the "fulminant scoop" and host of the MaratonaMentana, did not specify it. And it is precisely this narrative, supported by all the information that is the first obscure point to highlight.

As already written, Draghi only asked for a name presented by the entire government coalition, to feel more protected and it was very clear!

Remember one fundamental thing well: it is not Mario Draghi who seeks power but it is power that seeks him, he studied by the Jesuits for this to happen. The re-election of President Mattarella gives way to a great uproar over the paucity of politics, its failure and above all the request for electoral suffrage for the election of the President; they even asked for an immediate law on the matter, without knowing that it is the Constitution that regulates such a modality.

A modality that would need checks and balances, or to outline the power and the necessary counterpower: bicameral stuff that would require years of study and work, to make everyone agree.

Keeping in mind that if we were to go in this direction, we risk that social networks, influencers and all the so-called "keyboard lions" who have time to waste on the web would become decisive.

But this is politics with all its charm, its misery, its necessary importance for the social life of all of us; the difference lies in the protagonists. Those of the First Republic, like it or not, were a much more cultured ruling class than the current one, in need they had a strong sense of the state and for the most part, if they were not professors, jurists, lawyers or other but professional politicians, they were after having studied in party schools and had a lot of apprenticeship, politics and administration.

From this Parliament, in this historical period, an institutional sensitivity was expected that would reassure the country, everything, keeping it safe from insipid electoral propaganda in view of next year's policies.

The shameful thing is that both sides have opened their congresses during the election of the presidency of the Republic, knowing they have the "safe second-hand" parachute. And this is the first clear thing of these elections!

We skim over the chronicle of the six days of voting, all focused on the search for the "King Maker" that most of the audience and parliamentarians interviewed do not know what it means!

The first three votes have sanctioned a blank ballot and it would have been fun if a White Lady had come out, as happened in 92 for an elderly Emilian azdora.

The two opposite centers show divisions within them which will certainly have repercussions in the future; on the right candidates are burning like not even in the Middle Ages with witches, with institutional follies such as that of making their name and proposing the appointment of the second position of the Republic and then sending it to the stake.

It is useless to continue to feel sorry for yourself, whining that your opponents don't let you touch the ball when you don't know how to play. On the left, in addition to the well-known current divisions, the suspicion, quite evident, of the betrayal of the name of the President of the Senate and that of another unacceptable candidate is hinted at.

And we have come to the second clear thing about this election: Mala tempora currunt!

The second dark point is tinged with yellow.

According to the reconstructions, even if here the scene is more explanatory than the background, Conte, Letta and Salvini meet in the M5S offices; the location immediately suggests that this time the "King Maker" is Conte ...

They get together for about two hours, then the catwalk begins in front of the cameras. The first to speak is Letta.

Attention here is a question of proxemics, as the educated ones say, that is the ability to interpret gestures and the various scales of voice tones.

Letta appears worried but confident, he says that there could be an agreement on a President or a President apart from everyone feeling winners, he says we will have to work on it again. In the middle of the speech he repeats that there is an agreement on a President or on a President, with a variation of tone on a President. For those who are used to being in front of a monitor to study Close-ups, it is clear that they have chosen a woman, thirty years of directing weigh on them.

Secondly, Salvini comes out and immediately enters (the exact opposite of what Letta had preached) the choice of a woman as President and traces, without naming her, the exact profile of the director general of Dis, the Department for information and security, Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni.

Conte does the same thing by making the choice of a woman President and, if I remember correctly, by mentioning the name of Belloni. It matters little, followed by the tweets of Meloni and Grillo radiant for the choice made on her name. It's done!

If the devil makes the pot to her lid, Renzi will take care of it, who, mind you, is a friend of Elisabetta Belloni and it is he, as long as the timing helps me, who has appointed her Secretary General of the Farnesina. Against the choice he shoots to zero, insisting that it is unacceptable that the Head of the Secret Service is proposed as Head of State.

Draghi who, by total esteem, appointed her seven months earlier to that role, reveals all his opposition to this hypothesis. Di Maio, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who has grown considerably politically thanks to Belloni, fires a statement against the head of his Movement, Antonio Conte.

The PD not received, disappears. Just as Conte disappears, Saturday morning, for about three hours, on the day of the eighth vote. Dagospia is the only one who notices him and jokes about it saying that he is at the hairdresser's.

Now, given that the perfect team had been found, as the opinion leaders who know a lot say, to have a personality of the highest prestige, super partes and moreover finally a woman as President, because it was precisely from her alleged friends that the fire of barrage?

Draghi at this point the bell rings: recreation is over. He phones President Mattarella and asks him to stay, otherwise he leaves Palazzo Chigi. Which he had already asked him in September, as recently written by Marzio Breda, in the "Corriere delle Sera:" If you stay, I'll stay too ". As proof that he never thought about it at the Quirinale.

The rest is news.

In conclusion: rumors say that it was Belloni herself, not surprisingly the same school as Mario Draghi, who suggested Di Maio to shoot that tweet. If this were the case, the geopolitical situation is so serious that we cannot afford to move it to the Quirinale.

This is: we cannot afford to lose Draghi at Palazzo Chigi and to lose Mattarella at the Quirinale.

Good job!
