He was Luchino Visconti’s grandson and he had handed down the aesthetic sense to him. Great portraitist, poet, but mostly a photographer. Estimated for his talent, he has been able to enhance “Made in Italy” fashion thanks to his shots and advertising campaigns for prestigious brands that have made the world day.

Giovanni was born on December 27th, 1955 in Milan, and it is here where he began his career as a photographer with a seminar in the 70s, followed by the years of apprenticeship between photos and techniques of the craft, until arriving in '75 -'76 , years in which the prestigious London auction house Christie's commissioned him to work for them, putting his studies to good use.

Only in 1981, however, his career underwent a turning point, with the meeting of Carla Ghiglieri, who became his agent and brought him closer to the world of fashion and in 1982, he began collaborating with Vogue Italia.

Although his career begins and stands out in the fashion world, Gastel as well as a photographer was also very attracted to art, so that in 1997, the Milan Triennale dedicates him a solo exhibition curated by the great art critic, Germano Celant, exhibition that places Giovanni at the top of the world photographic elite, thus appearing in specialized magazines together with famous photographers such as Oliviero Toscani, Giampaolo Barbieri, Ferdinando Scianna, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino and Jürgen Teller.

Since 2000 Gastel has opened his doors to portraits, a branch of photography in which he had not yet immersed himself, with great perdition and talent immortalized Barack Obama, Ettore Sottsass, Roberto Bolle, Marco Pannella, Johnny Depp but also Fiorello and Pino Daniele.

His portrait work culminates with an exhibition at the Maxxi Museum in Rome in the year 2020 with a selection of 200 portraits that portray the faces of people from the world of culture, design, art, fashion, music, entertainment and of the politics that he himself met during his 40-year career.

Giovanni Gastel leaves us and with him he also leaves an immense void in the world of photography, art and fashion. A great mourning that embraces thousands of people who have known him in person or through his "works of art".
