Black Mirror 5 has finally arrived and we've never been so ready. One of the most controversial and appreciated series of these years, which reflects upon a humanity tamed by technology and its disturbing consequences, has just released three brand new episodes. Of course we were waiting for
"Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too", starring
Miley Cyrus. The
trailer soon caught our attention, and we couldn't wait to see the entire plot.
Rachel is a fifteen-year-old shy girl who is an absolute fangirl of
Ashely O. She is the ultimate version of a pop star, and comes with the whole package: motivational lyrics, positive vibes, a little dance, a lot of smiles, futuristic outfits and a very cool pink asymmetrical wig. Their lives are destined to intermingle thanks to Ashley O's
artificial surrogate/playful Siri doll.
Ashley O's character is surely the most interesting one. She's trapped in a life she doesn't want, blackmailed by an unscrupulous aunt who controls her career and her personality. She
assumes drugs on a daily basis in order to be
euphoric and creative 24/7, as if she couldn't have any other emotion. When Ashley will stop taking her medicines and will finally rebel against a wildly capitalistic system,
she will risk her life. But eventually it will be necessary for a new chapter of her life.
It is hard not to think about all the similarities this story shares with Miley's personal career, started with her teenage alter ego
Hannah Montana. A wig, a bunch of songs about the good things in life, the dances, the smiles, ... it all recalls to Miley's past and her disruptive change of direction. She even
denied her Disney's past and had a thing for licking hammers, and her lyrics were all about
sex, drug and rock&roll.
The choice of interpreting this character is not naive, but could be actually an artistic expression that
the singer herself used to talk about her past and her present, and the world she lives in. Trapped in a
cage of hypocrisy and surrounded by greedy and unscrupulous figures, she finally decided to do what she wanted. And her
spontaneity paid her back, since all her albums where a bop, starting from
"Bangerz". She recently dropped a new mini album titled
"She Is Coming", sponsored by a series of super chic and provocative shots and a few hilarious and sexy videos.
The episode was also about the eternal conflict between
fiction and reality, in which technology will play an increasing role. And the scene was devoted
to women. Miley chose another interesting project that confirms her talent and her need to communicate new things.
