A chat with Muriel De Gennaro aka @murielxo: between diversity, inclusiveness and the philosophy of “as long as you talk about it”

In this interview Muriel explains why talking often proves to be the key to everything

By , ,

The issues that, with its contents, Muriel deals with on a daily basis coincide with a historical moment in which we really need to clear sectors that are too often passed for normal because they are rooted in a wrong society.

Content creator, influencer, activist, Muriel De Gennaro, gushes energy from all pores (also perceptible via Zoom) and it is no coincidence that he makes conscious lightness his main ally. The philosophy of “as long as you talk about it” becomes a cutting weapon with which to fight inequality and marginalization.

Hi Muriel, tell us about your story, from insecurity to acceptance and love for yourself: what has marked the turning point?

Hi Acrimònia, the insecurities started in elementary school. I constantly felt my eyes on me and my sense of inadequacy was joined by the wrong comments of my doctor who saw the cause of my limp in overweight, my Italian teacher, my classmates ...

The death of my father, then, marked a moment of great dejection: I filled the void left with food.

The averages, on the other hand, trigger an up & down period. But losing weight didn't make me happy.

What brought me to full awareness of myself? In 2019 the time comes for a show in underwear which they ask me to participate in in Piazza Duomo, in Milan. I remember once it was over I burst into a liberating cry. Inside me I felt the rebirth: “I can do what I want”.

How and when do you start approaching the world of social media?

I started in 2012 with my YouTube channel. The first videos are the story of my life, a sort of logbook.

What was the main need that led you to approach social media?

I strongly wanted to work in the entertainment world. But all the auditions I did went wrong. So I said to myself “why not try it alone?”

Do you believe that the change in inclusion is actually taking place in a society that continues to feed on stereotypes?

There has been a change. With the birth of social networks this process was encouraged. If before we were passive users, now we are pro-active. Many issues have been cleared through customs thanks to people who have had the courage to talk about them through these tools.

Why do you think the curvy theme is often exploited?

I believe that exploitation in some cases contributes to highlighting issues that otherwise would not be dealt with. I am part of the team “as long as you talk about it”. Of everything that has been discussed in recent years, mainly via social media, we will sum up a change in a little while ...

Have you become a model for many, a story that has stuck with you and deserves to be told?

When I was shooting the first YouTube videos it happened to me on the street that some guys stopped me crying and telling me that thanks to me they managed to “come out of the closet”. Inside I was like “these videos are really working”.

What would a younger you think seeing your videos?

When I was little, it was impossible to find someone to relate to. If I found someone who looked like me, it was the video representation of the unlucky friend giving advice to the beauty of the school.

If the small version of me had seen my videos, they would have been happy to find a virtual friend to share thoughts with.

Go back a few years: what would you tell the girl you were? And what girl will you be?

To the girl I was I would say not to feel wrong because everyone reacts to the bad things in life as they see fit, the important thing is not to change for others, to focus on herself and her needs.

I would say to Muriel of the future not to lose curiosity, I wish her to always be on the spot, not to be prejudiced against the news but to ride the wave.

What makes Sloggi's Body Adapt revolutionary?

I have always had a bad relationship with underwear. Sexy things never fit me unless I was shopping in the States.

Thanks to its fabric, Body Adapt adapts to you. It is almost impossible not to make it adapt to your body, it shapes itself. In this sense it is a real revolution.

In the end, Muriel spoils the release of a docu series on his YouTube channel. When? Earlier than you think!
