What is behind the TV of talent shows?

Analysis of a world of which we struggle to have an objective opinion

By

The Talent Show is a show based on the performances of unknown artists, especially in the musical field and in Terpsichorean grace. Then there are some “staging” that vary from gymnastic virtuosity to comic / grotesque.

Perhaps not everyone knows that “Amici”, the most successful Talent of recent years, was originally born as a sort of Talk / Reality in 1992, with a first edition conducted by Lella Costa and subsequently by a young Maria De Filippi, not yet successful author.

The program was immediately “tailed” by RaiDue, first with “Caro Diario” and later with “Mixer Giovani”, both conducted by Sveva Sagramola. They were the “last fires” of a generalist TV that was concerned with exploring the world of children. It was the TV of real directors, like Brando Giordani and Giovanni Minoli.

In Italy, archetypes of current Talents can be considered “La Corrida”, first on radio and then on television, with Corrado and “Settevoci” which at the beginning no manager wanted and went on the air, as a filler, only for a delay in dubbing of the “Bonanza” series; conceived and conducted by Pippo Baudo. They had to be only a few episodes and instead had a resounding success, so much so that it was confirmed for other seasons.

The most demanding critics consider this type of Format harmful for children, considering the Talent as a shortcut to success. They even make it a pedagogical / psychological question, worrying that the losers of the race, in the end, feel too disheartened and that they get too depressed. Well, if that's the fear then let's do away with sport!

If anything, wanting to follow this line, there is more to worry about the winners, most of whom turn out to be simple “one hit wonder”, without being structured and helped to manage the momentary success.

If the structure is formed with the apprenticeship or many and many evenings in front of the public, help must come from people like Lucio Salvini, Mimma Gaspari and Mara Maionchi herself who for years have followed, curated and promoted dozens of young artists , since the mid-1960s.

From Nada to Renato Zero, from Fabrizio De Andrè to Gianna Nannini and again from Ornella Vanoni to Tiziano Ferro, they are artists who have been followed in their artistic and human journey, not only by hybrids and arrogant press offices, but by real accomplices of a splendid artistic adventure.

Today, similar characters no longer exist, on the other hand the press offices have remained, increasingly liquid and often harmful.

It is true that the circuit that went from the “Cantagiro” to a “Disco per l’Estate, from the “Castrocaro Festival” to the Festivalbar no longer exists, up to the top of the range such as the Sanremo Festival” and “Canzonissima”; television programs, where record companies often were the masters but which allowed many young artists to show off.

Today the only possible “showcases” that a young person has to exhibit are the Talent. And if X Factor is limited to a sing-only competition, “Amici” has the advantage of being a school also for classical and modern dance; art largely penalized by the disappearance of the dance troupes in the few TV shows.

The limit of these programs is that  the show is not delegated to the sole construction of the artistic performance of the guys, where teaching, rehearsals, fatigue are an integral part of the Show but is increasingly highlighted, with satisfaction , the competition between jurors or teachers who ultimately mortify the children themselves.

Scenes of spite, embarrassing and frankly gratuitous, between Cuccarini and Celentano or between Morgan and Ventura, are part of that narcissism, all televised, which young people should not be shown and consequently taught. At least that's how pedagogy teaches!
