In Kabul a siege without logic

The mysteries of a disastrous retreat and the blindness of a narrative that does not question the sensational errors of the West and the Taliban themselves. What is really happening in Kabul after the suicide bombing at the airport? All the questions that are not answered

By

An old saying says: “If you really have to screw it up, get it big!” We allow ourselves to add: “Above all, do it well”.

Whatever you think, the sudden exit of the Americans and consequently of the entire NATO team is a fact of enormous significance. Unfortunately, the way out is proving to be disastrous. This is a fact!

And it is this kind of alleged unpreparedness that is perplexing, starting with the timing, so much so that the American analyst Robert Kaplan crushes the withdrawal of US troops: “We had to leave, but not like that. We had to wait for winter, when snow covers the country, making major offensives difficult, and Russia and China had to be involved in negotiations with the Taliban a long time ago…”

If at a diplomatic level Kaplan is absolutely right, all the more serious is that the Italians were not involved in military-logistics matters; our contingent has two excellent departments that all NATO forces envy us: the Alpine Corps and the Carabinieri. The first has the exceptional training of knowing how to move over more than steep terrain and Afghanistan is full of them, the second has a capacity for dialogue that derives from its centuries-old branching in the territory.

In preparing a “clean, safe and silent” way out, their contribution would have been invaluable, especially in the evacuation of Afghans in danger, for having collaborated with the various embassies.

That the Americans wanted to detach themselves from that inaccessible territory was known since the time of Barack Obama, that Trump has rectified the exit, through the Doha agreements sanctioned by the then US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and the number two of the Taliban , Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, falls within his legitimate prerogatives; it was February 29, 2020. This agreement sanctioned, de facto, the political recognition of the Taliban government and the political-military inconsistency of Europe, perennially in tow of American decisions.

What then in Italy is discussing whether or not to dialogue with the Taliban is stuff to put your hands in your hair due to the cultural inconsistency of our politicians: if you want to save human lives or use dialogue or, if you are capable, use force. Otherwise it's just “theater”!

The four points of the Doha agreement - withdrawal of troops, no to terrorism, peace negotiations and truce - were all held together: “Nothing is decided until everything is decided”.

This up to the hasty decision of Biden who, due to haste, made everything fall apart. The reason why? It is not known, except that in addition to the known four points there was something else, which is not known and that the last one is skipped. However, the responsibilities all fall on the President of the USA and on his generals, an indivisible pair.

But the real absence of logic lies in the attitude of the Taliban, which up to now have not constituted a regent government, after the ignoble flight of former President Abdul Ghani and the conquest of the main Afghan cities. They behave, in words, as a government force, therefore no longer terrorists; they reassure international public opinion that there will be no purges or violent acts against women; knowing that they have televisions from all over the world on in their own home, they have every interest in making a “relaxed and feel-good” propaganda, to gain international credibility.

Consequently, they have every interest that Westerners leave as soon as possible; they should facilitate evacuation precisely in order to turn off the TV headlights, returning to operate in obscurantism for their part.

There is no political logic in putting checkpoints in the access roads to the airport, as well as beheading the police chief, now with the headlights on; there is no logic in slaughtering a comedian in front of everyone, as well as “turning off” the music. These are all ignominies that “could have been put off” with the lights off. Why exasperate an already dramatic situation of his, without deriving an advantage of legitimation?

Now they tell us that the bombs near the airport, announced for days, are the work of Isis K, an acronym never heard until two days ago. All the geo-political experts explain to us that they are a hyper extremist faction, a bitter enemy of the Taliban, judged too soft.

So, in the proximity of the construction of an Islamic State, the future Mecca of terrorism around the world, four exalted people (in Italy we would call them four Tafazzi) would like to blow up what was Bin Laden's most ambitious project?

As usual, the narrative is declined by the information, slavishly following the government papers. Mala tempora currunt!

P.S. In the general hell of Kabul stands the “king of jackals”: the mercenary Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater, who asks for $6,500 per person to make people flee the country after the arrival of the Taliban. All under the eyes of the NATO presidium that monitors the site's security.

The logic here is that in the chaos you get the biggest and most lousy profits!
