5 women in the fashion system to learn from

March 8th 2020

By

Also this year, as every March 8th, all of us will fall victim to a social scourge that, thanks to facebook with its “buongiornissimokaffèèè”, made us protagonists of many posts that statistically begin with “we want to celebrate only the real women...” so I'm sorry for you fake women, you're not part of this category. Punctual as your period during the beach holiday, those 2/3 (if you're lucky) greetings will soon arrive, in which they want to remind us how magical and angelical we are, fantastic creatures, generators of life and sweetly complicated.

It's frustrating to feel obliged to respond politely with a tiny 'thank you', that hides a more than justified disappointment. But we know, you can't argue via Whatsapp with your old uncle Antonio, if only because it would clash with this mimosa glittery gif he sent, and so you keep quiet, aware that the day will only get worst.

What many people do not understand is that is not just a celebration of being a woman, 'cause we don't want to celebrate a sex over the other, but it's called the “International women's day”. What sense would it make to celebrate only females and not males if we make it a matter of biological and genetic differences? We're not physiologically better nor do we want to be. What we want is nothing but equality.

This day is, or at least should be, so tiring. Because if on one hand we want to remember those who did so much for us and allowed us to get here (only 50 years ago female adultery was no longer a crime in Italy, but who has ever punished men?); on the other hand, the sour taste is too pungent to claim victory over inequalities that unfortunately unite us.

Today we would like to celebrate this day by bringing you some shining examples, because there are many talented and intelligent women in this world. These women, who have in common the fact of being part of the fashion industry, have inspired, influences, infuse courage, set a precedent, trends and styles, educated, entertained and amused us. Five women from whom we can learn a lot and toward whom we have a deep ammiration.

Un post condiviso da Maria Grazia Chiuri (@mariagraziachiuri) in data:

“We should all be feminist” says Maria grazia Chiuri, and before her Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Maria Grazia is the creative director of the Maison Dior, she's like the first italian woman on the throne of France. A background in Valentino next to Piccioli, she deserves credit for designing the “Rockstud” line, but it's in Dior that she achieves the biggest french honor: the Légion d'Honneur, and she's the first italian designer and woman to win this prize. Pragmatic and concrete, dynamic and always one step ahead. We celebrate her for not having kept silent when there was still much to talk about.

Leandra is the quintessence of maximalism, getting on well with different colors with no rules. With a subtle humor and immeasurable courage. Me #milano🇮🇹

Un post condiviso da Lea T (@leat) in data:

In a recent interview she said she didn't feel free in Italy, well she's right. Lea Cerezo, aka Lea T, Brazilian transsexual model but raised in Italy and it's here where she's been fighting against all the discriminations she suffers. Lea has walked the most important catwalk, she has reached unthinkable goals and she can thank nobody but herself; being able to complete a long and hard process has not made her immune to the mean things. “Did the surgery hurt you?” “You're so beautifull even if you're a transgender” “Do you enjoy your sexual life?” . We celebrate her for having faught this battle openly without shame or fear, and for doing this for her rights, for everybody's rights.

Vivienne & @ndreaskronthaler explain their plan to save the world for The @guardianfashion shot by Juergen Teller

Un post condiviso da Vivienne Westwood (@viviennewestwood) in data:

78 years lived in the name of anarchy, Vivienne Westwood is still a fervent activist and she was the most innovative designer of all (but she does not consider herself so). Vivienne has many facet and in the course of her life she has shown us all: from the misery of a popular house to the comforts of a multi-million dollar company; from her dresses with boiled chicken bones to lace and lingery; Vivienne is sensationat, early vegan, at 40 yo she decided to resume her studies which rekindle her ardent soul. Pioneer of nonconformity, we celebrate her for being so subversive and for stubbornly desiring to leave a mark for posterity (mission accomplished).

Un post condiviso da francasozzani1 (@francasozzani1) in data:

At 66 the most elegant woman in this peninsula left us. Franca Sozzani has been the historic editor of Vogue Italia for 28 years. Shy and reserved but never too far from the most uncomfortable issue, she told us about female beauty by demolishing the typical standards. Famous is her Black issue dedicated to all back women out there but not without controversy. Franca, so slender e never too much, we celebrate her discretion in her job and the holy dedication to it... and her hair.

Happy international women's day. The sour taste is still here however, hoping that these five women can make this less pungent.
